The Wierzchowo [vʲɛʃˈχɔvɔ] (German Virchowsee ) is a body of water in Poland. It is located in the south-east of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in the Gmina Szczecinek ( rural community Neustettin ) in the Powiat Szczecinecki ( Neustettin district ).
The Wierzchowo is located in the city triangle Bobolice ( Bublitz ), Biały Bór ( Baldenburg ) and Szczecinek ( Neustettin ) within the Pojezierze Drawskie ( Dramburger Lake District ) as part of the Pomeranian Lake District . State road 11 (former German Reichsstrasse 160 ) runs along the eastern shore of the lake from Kołobrzeg ( Kolberg ) and Koszalin ( Köslin ) to Posen and Bytom ( Beuthen / OS ).
The Wierzchowo (earlier forms of the name are also Wirchow or Würchowsee ) is flowed through by the Gwda ( Küddow ), a tributary of the Netze , and irrigated by it and several small tributaries. It occupies an area of 7.32 km² with a width of 5.2 km and a length of 2.2 km. The maximum depth is 26.5 meters.
The Gwda flows into the lake at the village of Grąbczyn ( Grumsdorf ) and leaves it again at Stare Wierzchowo ( Sassenburg ). Here and also at Wierzchowo ( Wurchow ) on the west bank there are systems for extracting sand from the water.
“Der Wurl” is a name for the Virchow Lake, under which Ludwig Giesebrecht (1792–1873) wrote a text that Carl Loewe (1796–1869) set to music.
