Ludwig Giesebrecht

Heinrich Ludwig Theodor Giesebrecht (born July 5, 1792 in Mirow , † March 18, 1873 in Jasenitz ) was a German poet and historian .

Life

Ludwig Giesebrecht was the third son of Mirow pastor Benjamin Giesebrecht (1741–1826) and his wife Elisabeth, daughter of Mirow pastor Johann Ludwig Leithäuser. After he and his twin brother Friedrich (1792–1875) had completed school in Mirow and the upper classes of the Zum grau Kloster grammar school in Berlin , both studied in Berlin from 1812 onwards. The following year they interrupted their studies and took part in the Wars of Liberation as volunteers in the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Hussar Regiment from 1813 to 1815 . After the Battle of the Katzbach , the twin brothers parted ways.

Ludwig Giesebrecht was initially unable to continue his military service due to an illness. After his recovery he studied at the University of Greifswald . During this time he also dealt with historical and poetic work. During Napoleon's return he enlisted again in the military, but did not take part in any battle in France. After his return in 1816 he began teaching at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin . From 1826 professor, he taught German, history and religious studies there for 50 years.

In Szczecin he researched the history of Pomerania . In 1824 he became the first secretary of the newly founded Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology and was one of the editors first of the New Pomeranian Provincial Papers and then of the Baltic Studies published by the Society , in which he also published his own essays.

In 1848 he entered the Frankfurt National Assembly for the 11th constituency of the Pomerania Province ( Stettin ). There he joined the casino party .

Giesebrecht was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class in 1861 and the Hohenzollers House Order in 1866 . The University of Königsberg appointed him in 1862, the University of Greifswald in 1866 Dr. hc

Even in retirement from 1866 he continued to deal with historical studies and poetry. He spent the last years of his life with his daughter in Jasenitz .

His son was the mayor of Szczecin Felix Leonhard Giesebrecht .

He published several writings on historical subjects in the Baltic Studies . His friend Carl Loewe composed several oratorios based on Giesebrecht's texts.
