Jiří Nečas (born February 27, 1955 in Brno ; † June 1, 2018 ) was a Czech artist and linguist .

Life

After studying fine arts and the Czech language at the Palacký University in Olomouc (1974–79), he worked as an artist and exhibition curator in Poznan / Poland, where he taught at the university there from 1981 to 1996 and did a PhD.

Since 1997 he has lived and worked as a freelance artist in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. For the artist Jiří Nečas, drawing was the focus. The content-related reflection, which usually starts with a term, a sentence or certain numerical relationships, is followed by a conceptual clarification in terms of formal aesthetics and technology. It enables the graphic implementation with controlled spontaneity.

His artistic and literary understanding is shaped by his systematic preoccupation with the music of the 20th century. In his artist's books , leporellos and notebooks, rhythmically set lines unfold between the traditionally legible linguistic signs like a "Morse Code" (JN) or like a 'graphic setting' of the spoken language. As a linguist, his drawn comments are images for the word behind the word, or for the associations related to the linguistic deeper meaning. Reading here becomes a deciphering of abstract or figurative signs with a single or ambiguous meaning, which does not necessarily imply understanding the signs. In numerous works he takes his starting point from certain numerical relationships that have been pointing to the close connection between geometry , music and cosmology since ancient times . His preoccupation with ancient Chinese philosophy , literature and art, in turn, shows itself in the striving for reduction, in dealing with empty space. Since the 1980s his works have been exhibited internationally in galleries, museums and other cultural institutions. Since 2008 he has worked in the private boarding school in Solling as an art teacher for high school students.
