Jiří Pešek (football player)

Jiří Pešek (born June 4, 1927 in Prague ; † May 20, 2011 ) was a Czechoslovak football player and coach of Czech origin.

Player career

In the club

Jiří Pešek played as a youth at FC Bohemians Prague , where he made his debut in the first division team in the 1943/44 season at the age of 16. Soon the left winger was one of the best attackers in the league.

1952 changed Pešek to Sparta Prague , where she won in 1952 and 1954 Championship . In the 1954 season, Pešek was the top scorer in the league with 15 goals and scored his hundredth goal in the top division on August 15, 1954.

During his time at Sparta Prague, Jiří Pešek also worked in a ČKD factory. When the team did not return from a friendly game until around midnight in 1955 and Pešek refused to compete in the factory the next morning, his time at Sparta was over. He moved to Slavia Prague , which was then playing as Dynamo Prague . For Slavia, who was mostly in the midfield of the league, Pešek scored 38 goals. In 1959 Pešek went to Motorlet Prague , with whom he was promoted to the first division in 1963, but there the team could only hold a year and was relegated. After the 1964/65 season, Pešek ended his career. He had scored 149 goals in 298 first division games.

In the national team

Jiří Pešek was used on May 11, 1947 for the first time in the Czechoslovak national team . In 1948 he was checked at the border, and 7,000 crowns were found, which Pešek said he wanted to use to buy a coat in Yugoslavia. From then on Pešek was listed as a smuggler and was not allowed to leave the country until 1954. This year he was part of the Czechoslovak squad at the World Cup in Switzerland , the team did not get beyond the group stage. His last of a total of eleven international matches was played by Pešek on October 27, 1957 in a 4-1 victory over the East German team in front of 110,000 spectators in the Leipzig Central Stadium .

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, Jiří Pešek first worked as a coach at Viktoria Žižkov , from 1967 to 1969 at Baník Příbram , which he led first in the fourth, then in the third division. In 1970 he worked at Sparta Chicago in the USA . In 1975/76 he was the coach of the Greek first division club Panserraikos , the team rose from bottom of the table. From 1978 to 1980 Pešek coached the Finnish Olympic team, 1981 Valur Reykjavík . In 1982/83 he worked in North Yemen, in 1993/94 he coached the Indian national team .

Jiří Pešek died on May 20, 2011 at the age of 83.
