Jiří Stráský (born March 8, 1946 in Brno ) is a Czech civil engineer, known for bridge construction.

Life

Strasky received his doctorate from the Technical University of Brno in 1969 and then worked at the Dopravní stavby (transport engineering) office in Olomouc , where he became chief engineer and vice-president in 1984. From 1991 to 1994 he was project manager at TY Lin in San Francisco. From 1994 he was professor for prestressed concrete at the TU Brno and had his own engineering office Stráský, Hustý a partneři sro in Brno.

He is known for suspension bridges and strap bridges (Stress Ribbon Bridge) for pedestrians, such as the bridge over bay at Schweizertal ( Vranovská přehrada ) at Onšov for which he 1994 by the fip - International Fédération de la Précontrainte was excellent. The Dopravní stavby company also developed its own prestressed concrete system and cable-stayed bridges were also designed there, such as the bridge over the Elbe near Poděbrady in 1987 (1990 Award for Outstanding Structures from fip). In 1997 he received an award from the Czech Steel and Concrete Companies and the Czech Ministry of Construction for the arched bridge over the Brno-Vienna motorway.

He built many bridges in North America and works there as a consulting engineer. The Willamette River Bridge in Eugene (Oregon) and the Delta Ponds Pedestrian Bridge in Eugene were honored there. He also received the US Steel Bridge Award for the renovation of St. Johns Bridge in Portland, Oregon, and he received the Portland Cement Association Award of Excellence in 2004 for the McKenzie River Bridge in Portland, and in 2002 for the Rough River Pedestrian Bridge in Grants Pass, Oregon, 2000 for the Golf Cart Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego and 1990 for the Sacramento River Trail Pedestrian Bridge. His pedestrian bridge over the Svratka River in Brno received the fib's Award for Outstanding Structures in 2010. In England he received the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award in 2002 for the Kent Messenger Millennium Bridge in Maidstone.

In 2013 he received the Albert Caquot Prize , in 2011 the Icaro Prize of the University of Coruna, in 2010 the Freyssinet Medal , in 1999 the Medal of Merit of the Fédération internationale du béton (fib), in 1990 the Fritz Schumacher Prize of the University of Hanover (on the recommendation of Fritz Leonhardt ) and the 2003 CTU Award from the University of Dundee.
