A model of the Jiaolong submarine

The Jiaolong is a Chinese manned research submarine that is 8.20 meters long and weighs 22 tons. The name comes from one in a forecast occurring sea dragon (see. "Long" ). The submarine was first tested in summer 2010 in the South China Sea . It is used for deep sea research .

After the "Jiaolong" had previously made 17 dives in depths of up to 3795 meters, she reached a depth of 5057 meters in a six-hour dive on July 27, 2011 with a three-person crew in the Pacific and 7,062 meters in June 2012; this is a new record for China. The submarine is designed for a maximum diving depth of 7000 meters. It is equipped with devices for recording videos and photos and has a device for collecting samples. Thanks to an autopilot- like control mechanism, the 2-meter diving ball made of titanium can be moved at a constant distance from the seabed .

The designer Weicheng Cui received the Hans Hass Award in 2014 .
