Jim Sherwood
Jim "Motorhead" Sherwood (actually: Euclid James Sherwood ; born May 8, 1942 in Arkansas City (Kansas) ; † December 25, 2011 ) was an American rock and fusion musician ( soprano , tenor and baritone saxophone , Tambourine , vocals ) in Frank Zappa's band Mothers of Invention .
biography
Sherwood and Zappa met in 1956 at Antelope Valley High School in California. He then worked in Zappa's first band, the R&B group The Black-Outs . Sherwood and Zappa then played in Ontario in rock 'n' roll / R&B group The Omens . Sherwood also played with the Blackouts (1957–1962) and The Village Inn Band (1965). After Zappa divorced from his first wife, survived the two musicians in the Pal Recording Studio , which Zappa bought in 1964 and in Studio Z was renamed. Sherwood was initially Roadie Equipment Manager for the Mothers of Invention, and he also managed some sound effects (with voice and saxophone) for their first album, Freak Out! (1966) at. During the group's engagement at New York's Garrick Theater in 1967, he became a full member of the group and took part in their early albums Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasel's Ripped My Flesh . He got the nickname Motorhead from band singer Ray Collins because of his passion for screwing on cars, trucks and motorcycles:
- "He said 'it sounds like you've got a little motor in your head', so they just called me Motorhead and that seemed to stick".
After the Mothers were dissolved by Zappa in 1969, he played with him at irregular intervals, for example in 1981 on the album You Are What You Is , Läther and the last album that Zappa was able to complete before his death, Civilization Phaze III . In 1971 Sherwood also starred in the film 200 Motels as Larry Fanoga . In 1973 he played on the debut album For Real! the doo-wop group Ruben and the Jets ; he produced and arranged the song If I Could Only Be Your Love Again .
In his later years, Sherwood worked on various projects for Mothers alumni, such as The Grandmothers and with Don Preston , Ant-Bee and Sandro Oliva.
