Abilio James "Jim" Acosta (born April 17, 1971 in Washington, DC ) is an American journalist . He works for the cable news channel CNN as the chief correspondent for the White House .

Life

Acosta is the son of a refugee who came to the United States from Cuba as a child. He graduated cum laude from James Madison University with a bachelor's degree in mass communication and a minor in political science . He began his journalistic work at the radio station WMAL in Washington, DC. He then worked as a reporter and announcer for various CBS TV stations a . a. for WBBM-TV, the CBS station in Chicago , the CBS partner KTVT-TV in Dallas and for WBIR-TV in Knoxville. Acosta joined CNN in 2007, initially working at the Atlanta headquarters. He later moved to Washington. He covered the Obama administration and the Trump administration . In early 2018, he became CNN's chief correspondent for the White House .

During a press conference by US President Donald Trump on November 7, 2018, Acosta asked questions about a migrant caravan from Central America and the investigation into alleged Russian influence on the US election campaign . After Trump gave Acosta an unsatisfactory answer and turned down Acosta's request, Acosta refused to hand over the microphone and interfered with an intern who wanted to take the microphone from him and pass it on to other journalists and touched her arm, for which he immediately apologized. Trump then called him a “rude, terrible person”, CNN was an “enemy of the people”. As a result, Acosta's accreditation for the White House was withdrawn until further notice, which met with sharp criticism nationally and internationally. What happened at the press conference generated international reactions. The Süddeutsche Zeitung criticizes the fact that Acosta often does not ask actual questions at press conferences, but rather allegations or accusations formulated as questions, whereby the journalistic gain in knowledge is small. The FAZ said it was problematic when journalists make themselves the center of the story. However, one can only accuse Acosta of having behaved provocatively; not, however, for having touched the intern inappropriately. The press secretary of the White House Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a video that shows a part of the action. It generated international reactions and was rated differently by numerous media. Several media outlets accused Sanders of using a fake video. Others said that just converting and compressing a video to a GIF reduced the frame rate .

On November 16, 2018, a Washington court ruled that Acosta needed to get its accreditation back because the withdrawal violated its right to due process and freedom of expression .
