Jim Knapp
Jim Knapp (born July 28, 1939 in Chicago ) is an American jazz trumpeter , composer , band leader , arranger , who worked as a university teacher for a long time.
Live and act
Knapp graduated from the University of Illinois , Champaign-Urbana, where he earned a bachelor's and master's degree in composition. From the early 1970s taught at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle , where he has lived since; with his big band , the Jim Knapp Orchestra , he recorded three albums a. a. for Origin Records . Around 2010 he worked with the string ensemble Scrape , led jointly with violinist Eyvind Kang , for which he wrote the composition Just a Moment . Knapp is the author of the book Jazz Harmony . His compositions influenced musicians like Jim McNeely or Myra Melford . He has also worked on recordings with First Avenue (ECM, 1980) and Jay Clayton ( Tito's Acid Trip 1995). As a result of diabetes , his right leg had to be amputated. In Seattle, Cornish College and the Earshot Festival organized a benefit concert for him in November 2011.
