James "Jim" Loscutoff, Jr. (born February 2, 1930 in San Francisco , California - † December 1, 2015 ) was an American basketball player for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association . Known as a defensive specialist was the "Loscy" called Loscutoff regular player in the Celtics team that won seven of eight possible NBA championships between 1957 and 1964.

Career

Loscutoff was drafted in 1955 by Celtics coach Red Auerbach and played the role of the small winger . While the throw-safe builder players Bill Sharman , Bob Cousy and Sam Jones as well as the great winger Tom Heinsohn were responsible for the points , Loscutoff with the defensive center Bill Russell formed the defensive backbone of the team. Loscutoff soon earned the nickname "Jungle Jim" because of his tough defense.

Loscutoff was NBA champion seven times in 1957 and 1959 to 1964. In addition to his strong defense, Loscutoff was also the designated “protector” of the filigree playmaker Cousy, whom the opponents tried to throw off the concept with hard fouls. He was also known for his symbiotic relationship with his substitute Frank Vernon Ramsey , whose strengths were on the offensive: as soon as Loscutoff wore down his opponent, coach Auerbach Ramsey came on, who often scored easy points against the no longer fresh opponent.

Although Loscutoff achieved a rather unremarkable 6.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in his career, he is considered one of the greatest Celtics players of all time. When he ended his career, the Celtics offered him to never give his number 18 to another Celtic (jersey retirement). But Loscutoff refused because he wanted to honor "his" 18 by having other players carry them on. In fact, Celtics superstar Dave Cowens later wore the 18-shirt, which was then retired with Cowens. But the Celtics honor Loscutoff by hanging one with the inscription "LOSCY" in the Celtics home arena next to all the jerseys with the respective withdrawn numbers (e.g. Cowens and his 18) .
