Jim Mitchell (guitarist)

James "Jim" Mitchell (born 1935 or 1936 in Denver ; † March 7, 2016 ) was an American jazz guitarist .

Jim Mitchell, who spent his 45-year music career in New York City as a session and studio musician , worked for 26 years as a guitarist in the studio band on Sesame Street ; he also accompanied vocalists such as Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé , Barbra Streisand , Barbara Cook and Carol Burnett on their show. In the field of jazz he was involved in four recording sessions with Mort Lindsey and His Orchestra, Bobby Scott ( From Eden to Canaan , 1976) and Helen Forrest ( Now and Forever , 1983) between 1966 and 1985 , and with the Vinson Hill Sextet ( Misty , 1972) and Barbara Cook ( It's Better with a Band , 1981). With singer and pianist Joe Derise and bassist Ernie Fortado, he performed in New York jazz clubs in the early 1980s; The last recordings were made in 1985 with Derise. In 1990 he moved to Salisbury, Maryland , where he started performing with a trio called The Jazz Guys (with Bruce Chappelle and Ev Cook) using standards from the Great American Songbook .

He is not to be confused with the jazz guitarist Jimmy Mitchell, who played with Bobby Hackett .
