Jimmy Castor (born June 23, 1940 in New York City , † January 16, 2012 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American musician .
Life
In his youth, Castor was friends with Frankie Lymon . He wrote the track I Promise to Remember , which became a chart hit for Lymon and his teenagers in 1956 . When Lymon left the teenagers' group in 1957, Castor replaced him without them being able to build on the successful time before. From 1960 he went solo and was particularly successful as a saxophonist and studio musician. He played z. B. Dave Cortez 's hit Rinky Dink and Little Eva's The Loco-Motion . He also published his own recordings. He had a top 40 hit in 1967 with the instrumental Hey Leroy, Your Mama's Callin 'You .
The Jimmy Castor Bunch was born in the early 1970s and had some success with funky novelty songs . Their first hit It's Just Begun from 1972 was not a chart hit , but it is one of the classics when it comes to hip-hop samples. This was followed by the Troglodyte (Cave Man) , a bizarre caveman song that reached number 6 on the Billboard charts and number 4 on the R&B charts in the United States and was a million seller. The phrase “What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time”, spoken as an introduction, is very well known and is often used by music broadcasters when it comes to oldies or music reviews. With the Bertha Butt Boogie and King Kong , Castor and his "Bunch" had two more big hits that were made in the style of Troglodyte . He was successful in the US charts until the end of the 70s, from 1976 even without his accompanying band, after which his success dropped significantly.
In 1988 the duet Love Makes a Woman with Joyce Sims brought him to the attention again. He later got back on track with the teenagers who continued to exist and performed with them until the mid-90s.
