Life

In 1956 he formed his first band The Dixie Cats , later also called The Rockets , as a student at Baton Rouge High School.

His hit Just A Dream , written for the Ace Records label at the age of 19, reached number 4 on the Billboard charts and had sold over a million times just three months later.

In 1959 he played the lead role alongside Alan Freed in the musical film Go, Jimmy, Go , which was followed by the 1960 film Teenage Millionaire . From 1961 to 1963 he was in the military, but released more singles in the meantime.

Clanton became known as one of the few white singers of the New Orleans R & B / Rock & Roll sound and was nicknamed "Swamp Pop R&B Teenage Idol". He later performed with Dick Clark ’s American Band and greats like Fats Domino , Jerry Lee Lewis and The Platters .

With “Venus in Blue Jeans” (1962) he became known worldwide and was at the height of his career.

After that he couldn't land any more hits. According to his own statements, he was discouraged and desperate. In the 1970s he worked as a DJ. Triggered by a television program about Jesus, he found support in the Christian faith from 1980 and worked for the Lakewood Church in Houston until 1994 . Since 1994 he has appeared again in oldies shows and gives concerts.

In April 2007, Clanton was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame .

Jimmy lives in the USA with his wife Roxanne.
