Jiří Bělohlávek CBE (born February 24, 1946 in Prague ; † May 31, 2017 there ) was a Czech conductor .

Life

Jiří Bělohlávek studied with Sergiu Celibidache . From 1972 to 1978 he conducted the Brno Philharmonic and from 1977 to 1989 the Prague Symphony . From 1990 to 1992 he was the successor to Václav Neumann as chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic . In 1994 he founded the Prague Philharmonia Orchestra (Pražská komorní filharmonie) , to which he remained an honorary conductor after leaving in 2005. In 2003/2004 he was also chief conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava. From 2006 to 2012 he led the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London, whose first guest conductor he was from 1995 to 2000. In 2007, 2010 and 2012 he conducted this orchestra at the traditional event The last night of the proms in London , the final concert of each season of the popular Proms . From autumn 2012 he was again chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic.

Jiří Bělohlávek devoted himself in particular to the work of Czech composers from Antonín Dvořák to Leoš Janáček to Bohuslav Martinů .

He died on May 31, 2017 at the age of 71 after a long and serious illness.

Honors

For his services, Jiří Bělohlávek received the Order of the British Empire (Commander, CBE) in 2012 .
