Jitendra Nath Pande

Jitendra Nath Pande or JN Pande ( Hindi जितेंद्र नाथ पांडेय , born June 14, 1941 in Shikohabad , India ; died May 23, 2020 in New Delhi ) was an Indian medical doctor and specialist in lung diseases in New Delhi. He was Professor and Medical Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Pande was born in Shikohabad in 1941, the son of Shri Madan Mohan Pande and Smt. Kamla Devi Pande was born. His parents and ancestors came from Uttar Pradesh . He was the younger brother of Gyan N. Pande , Professor Emeritus at Swansea University and President of the International Center for Computational Engineering.

Pande completed his studies and medical training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and received his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1963 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1966 from AIIMS. There he specialized in pulmonary medicine and clinical epidemiology and stayed at AIIMS until his retirement. At AIIMS he treated numerous prominent people and was the personal doctor of the President of India. He was promoted to director of the department for clinical epidemiology and medical director of the AIIMS, and he was appointed professor of medicine at the AIIMS. After retiring, he worked as a medical consultant at the Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science & Research in New Delhi and continued to treat patients.

Pande was the first medical professional to set up intensive care units in hospitals in northern India. The Supreme Court of India , in its 1997/98 ruling on the ban on diesel buses in the capital, referred to the study by Dr. Pande on "Outdoor air pollution and emergency room visits to a hospital in Delhi".

As part of the COVID-19 pandemic in India in 2020, Pande treated numerous patients who were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus . He and his wife tested positive for the virus in May 2020 and went into quarantine at home. On May 23, 2020, he died in his sleep at the age of 78, despite the lack of symptoms, probably due to a heart attack .
