João Baptista Vieira Godinho (* 1742 in Mariana , Minas Gerais , Brazil , † February 13, 1811 in Bahia , Brazil) was a Portuguese military and colonial administrator.

Life

Godinho came from the Portuguese colony of Brazil. From 1774 he served in the artillery regiment in Goa .

Between 1785 and 1788 Godinho was governor of Portuguese Timor . He tried to break the monopoly that Chinese traders from Macau had built with Timor , as it had made Portuguese trade unprofitable. Godinho therefore advocated free trade between Timor and the colonial center of Portugal in Asia in Goa, instead of importing the required goods from the Dutch Batavia . In 1785 the governor had, at least nominally, received sovereignty over the trade tariffs in Portuguese Timor. Several customs stations were set up on the north coast, which also documented the Portuguese claim to ownership. As a result of the trade facilitation, more Portuguese and Armenian families also settled here .

Godinho succeeded in suppressing Luca's rebellion , the so-called " war of the mad ", which had been going on since 1777 . Also in the first year of his tenure in 1785, Godinho was able to persuade the Topasse leader Pedro da Hornay on Solor to return to the suzerainty of Portugal. For this Hornay was guaranteed the title and status of lieutenant general ( tenente general ), as was his nephew Dom Constantino do Rosario, the king of Solor. Thus fell Oe-Cusse with the old colonial capital Lifau and the island of Solor back to Portugal. Because of the alliance with Godinho, Pedro da Hornay took military action against the Dutch in west Timor, but the Viceroy of Goa did not approve of this at the time. Widely regarded as a capable governor, Godinho was dismissed early. A step that Goa later regretted.

After serving in Timor, Godinho became Brigadier General in Bahia and from 1810 Lieutenant General. From May 27, 1809 to September 30, 1810, Godinho was a member of a junta that formed the government in Bahia, Brazil.
