João Nuno Brochado

João Nuno Brochado (born October 3, 1983 in Porto ) is a Portuguese filmmaker who became known as a documentary filmmaker .

Life

Brochado comes from a family of artists and was interested in film as a teenager. In 2001 he began studying at the art school ( Escola das Artes ) of the Catholic University in his hometown of Porto, where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in sound and images with a focus on film. In the same year a course at the New York Film Academy and an internship at the film company Utopia Films in Lisbon followed.

In 2007 Brochado and three friends founded the production company Cimbalino Films in Porto . In addition to film productions, Cimbalino mainly produces commercials , but also music videos , including live videos by names such as Ana Moura or Os Azeitonas and clips and the like. a. for pop singer David Fonseca , the band GNR or the young fado singer Gisela João .

Brochado shot the series Não Linear for the public television broadcaster RTP between 2008 and 2014 . In 69 episodes in 30 minutes each, he presented the most innovative and creative projects that students developed at the Escola das Artes , where he himself was a student.

His documentary short film Tóquio Porto 9 horas was shown at several short film festivals, in particular the Doclisboa and the Caminhos do Cinema Português , where it won first prize.

His first feature film was the successful Uma Montanha do Tamanho do Homem in 2014 . Brochado tells the story of the "magical village" Drave , which slowly became extinct since the late 1980s and has been completely uninhabited since 2000, but is still maintained and has a great attraction.
