action

When the corrupt police superintendent Jo Pil-ho and a friend tried to rob a police warehouse, an explosion suddenly occurred and the warehouse was blown up. While his friend Han Gi-cheol dies, Jo is taken to the hospital. Other officers, who are already investigating Jo, understand their suspicions and ask what Jo was doing at the camp that evening. Jo quickly gets rid of his disposable cell phone that his wife could take before the police officers arrived.

While Jo is investigating the case, he also visits Gi-cheol's house, which should be 59 million won . But the money is missing. He watches a surveillance video from the street in front of the building and spots Jang Mi-na. He suspects her that Jo has already seen her and Gi-cheol together.

Before he died, Han Gi-cheol sent a video of the incidents at the camp to Jo Pil-ho and Mi-na. But Jo's cell phone was gone. Mi-na is the only one who has the video. The video reveals that the Taesung Corporation was behind the explosion to destroy evidence. The company has been investigated for a long time.

reception

Jo Pil-ho: The Dawn of Vengeance opened in South Korean cinemas on March 20, 2019 and reached 262,235 viewers.

The film received average reviews. According to Shim Sun-ah from Yonhap, the film only delivers the well-known. Although the film does not deal directly with the sinking of the Sewol ferry in 2014, the tragedy is omnipresent as it plays an important role in the life of the protagonist Mi-na . Here the director uses the catastrophe in an intelligent way to refer to a society where adults bring children to the brink of death. With this in mind, Mi-na says in the film that when she grows up, she would turn into a titan from Attack on Titan and destroy the presidential house and kill everyone in charge. The cause of the Sewol accident has been identified as human error, as well as irresponsible behavior by the ferry operator and the poorly executed rescue operation and reaction by the government.

Yoon Min-sik of the Korea Herald draws a similar conclusion. The film offers nothing new and is clichéd. On the other hand, Lee delivers a solid performance with comedic moments in the lead role. But unlike Shim, Yoon regards the introduction of the Sewol disaster as negative. It is not the core of the film and a car accident that caused the death of Mi-na's girlfriend would not have changed the plot. This would refer to a national tragedy, but it is not discussed in depth. It doesn't feel right to Yoon.
