Joachim Brandis the Elder

Joachim Brandis the Elder (born August 3, 1516 in Hanover ; died May 1, 1597 in Hildesheim ) was a German local politician and mayor of Hildesheim .

Life

Joachim Brandis the Elder was one of the sons of Hildesheim Mayor Henning Brandis , son of the cloth merchant Hans Brandis (1415–1481) and Ilsebe, daughter of Henning Winkelmann (died 1477) and his third wife Adelheid (born November 12, 1508), daughter of the Hanoverian Mayor Hans Blome . His older brother Tile Brandis (1511–1566) was elected mayor of Hildesheim several times.

Between 1576 and 1587, Joachim Brandis the Elder was also elected mayor of Hildesheim several times.

Joachim Brandis is considered to be the progenitor of the younger main line of the Brandis family.

Brandis married Anna Deichs on June 7, 1540. The son Joachim Brandis the Younger, born on May 27th, 1553 in Hildesheim (died on January 13th, 1615 there) was also elected mayor of Hildesheim several times.

In his second marriage, Joachim Brandis the Elder was married to Anna Wiedemeyer from Eldagsen on May 21, 1587 , or with Anna Wedemeyer, born in 1564, daughter or sister of the Grand Voyage of Calenberg, Konrad Wedemeyer the Elder .

In mid-2016, the Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim bought three oil paintings with portraits of family members from the Brandis family archive with the help of sponsors, including the portrait of Joachim Brandis the Elder. The pictures from the Renaissance are among the oldest examples of portraits of important Hildesheim citizens. After their restoration, it was announced that the paintings would be hung above the Struckmann Hall in the historic town hall.
