Joachim Clan (born October 6 or 10, 1566 in Hamburg ; † February 16, 1632 there ) was a German lawyer and Hamburg mayor .

Life

In 1586 Clan began studying law at the University of Wittenberg , turned to the University of Helmstedt in 1566, went to the University of Cologne in 1593, where he held further disputations, then went to the University of Leipzig in 1595 , and went to Speier the following year and then moved to the University of Basel on August 10, 1597 to obtain the degree of licentiate in law.

He then returned to his hometown, worked at the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Speier and on February 2, 1600, he became secretary of the Hamburg cathedral chapter. A year later he was able to assist the City Council of Hamburg as secretary from March 6th. In 1616 he was elected to the council and represented it in negotiations with the King of Denmark, the Duke of Holstein, the Archbishop of Bremen and other small states at the time. Due to his services he gained fame and reputation in the council, so that in 1622 he was elected mayor of the city of Hamburg. He carried out this office until his death in 1632. He achieved particular merits by not only acting as a skilful negotiating partner for the city, but also regulating maritime traffic and collaborating on Hamburg's city law in 1605, which was published by Georg Ludwig Frobenius .
