Joachim Gasquet (born March 31, 1873 in Aix-en-Provence , † May 6, 1921 in Paris ) was a Provencal writer and art critic .

Life

Born the son of the wealthy master baker Henri Gasquet, he published various literary magazines in Aix as a young man such as La Syrinx , Les Mois dorés (1896–98), Le Pays de France (1899–1902) and studied philosophy at the university from Aix. Gasquet made friends with writers such as Emmanuel Signoret , Marc Lafargue , Edmond Jaloux and André Gide . His father had been a schoolmate of Paul Cézanne ; the acquaintance of Cézanne after an exhibition in Aix-en-Provence in 1895 increased Gasquet's enthusiasm for his homeland, Provence . Joachim Gasquet had since become a big fan of Cézanne. His father, Henri Gasquet, allowed him to accompany Cézanne on his visits to the Louvre and to help in the studio. A deep friendship developed between Gasquet and Cézanne, which was reflected in letters and conversations. In 1896 Gasquet married the future writer Marie Gasquet .

After being a supporter of Alfred Dreyfus , he joined a nationalist movement in 1901 , then the Action française of his friend Charles Maurras , and he converted to Catholicism . Gasquet died in 1921 as a result of injuries sustained in the First World War .

Cezanne

His book Cézanne , published in 1921, bears witness to the artist's life, his worldview and artistic creativity. The book was published in two volumes. The first part is entitled “Ce que je sais ou ai vu de sa vie”. In it, the author tells of the artist's life since childhood, of his travels and his way of painting. The second part is entitled “Ce qu'il m'a dit”, which contains his conversations with the artist, written down fifteen years after Cézanne's death. Half of this compilation consists of authentic and the other half of conceived statements by Paul Cézanne. Even then, the traditional statements had an uncertain status. What did not prevent the Cézanne reception from orienting itself to Gasquet's book: statements made by him permeate both art-historical research and philosophical-aesthetic commentaries, especially in Germany, where a translated edition has been available since 1930; and they marked the literary appropriation of which Peter Handke's 1980 book The Teaching of Sainte-Victoire is a late witness.
