Joachim Gerchow

Joachim Gerchow (born June 26, 1921 in Mirow ; † June 23, 2012 in Hermannsburg ) was a German forensic doctor.

Life

After graduating from high school in Neustrelitz , Gerchow's medical studies in Rostock and Kiel were interrupted by military service in World War II. After the state examination in Kiel in 1946, he received his doctorate in 1948 and habilitation in 1954 under Wilhelm Hallermann . Gerchow was appointed to the chair for forensic and social medicine at the University of Frankfurt am Main in 1962 and retired there in 1989, he had his residence in Neu-Isenburg . Gerchow was a founding member of the German Society for Addiction Research and Addiction Therapy in 1978 and its chairman from 1982 to 1986. From 1984 to 1989 Gerchow was chairman of the German Society for Forensic Medicine . From 1987 to 2005 he was chairman of the ethics committee of the State Medical Association of Hesse.

Gerchow has published numerous papers and was significantly involved in the publication of the magazines "Blutalkohol", "German Journal for All Forensic Medicine" and "Journal for Forensic Medicine". The focus of his work was on providing evidence of the dangers posed by drink-driving and their elucidation.

In 1987 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and the Senator Lothar Danner Medal of the Federation against Alcohol and Drugs in Road Traffic . In 2007 he received the Hessian Order of Merit .
