from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joachim Helbig (born December 29, 1949 in Nuremberg ) is a German historian , postal history researcher and philatelist .

Life

Joachim Helbig studied Japanese Studies , German Studies and History in Erlangen between 1970 and 1976 . He completed his studies with a state examination in 1977. He wrote his admission thesis on the history of German studies in Erlangen. He worked as a senior teacher for German and history at a grammar school.

In connection with his German studies he published in 1982 together with Horst Brunner the correspondence between Wilhelm Scherer and Elias von Steinmeyer between 1872 and 1886. At the University of Bayreuth he received his doctorate in 1991 with the thesis Bavarian Postal History in the European Context 1806-1870 .

His research on old letters from the 16th to the middle of the 19th century focuses on questions relating to the logistical organization of the exchange of messages. An important means for this purpose is the establishment of a postal history letter database. The focus here is on the letters as a material cultural asset with their postings and transport instructions. Analyzes of larger correspondence help to understand the historical and organizational dimensions of relationships over longer periods of time and to identify problem-solving strategies of those involved.

Helbig worked as a stamp inspector in the Association of Philatelic Auditors until the end of 2019 .
