Joan Orleans (born December 1, 19 ?? in New Orleans , Louisiana , real name Joan Schmitt-Parks ) is an American gospel singer who was also known as a pop singer in the 1970s and 1980s.

biography

Joan Orleans grew up in the USA and moved to Germany in 1976. In 1977 she recorded the single Go Go for Philips . From 1978 onwards she was under contract with Ralph Siegel's label Jupiter for several years : A number of singles were created here, ranging from disco to pop ballads. In those years it was produced by Siegel, but also by Horst Hornung ( Maggie Mae , Ramona Wulf ). In 1981, an appearance on the television program Bio's Bahnhof contributed to Orleans' popularity. The single was also noteworthy I'm Still Crazy About You , in 1982 for the soundtrack to the movie The hunters withHelmut Berger and Barbara Sukowa was selected. In 1985 the singer released a single on Koch ( Take My Love ), which was produced by Mick Jackson.

At the end of the 1980s, Orleans recorded two pop albums with producer Nigel Wright , who had previously enjoyed success in long-term collaboration with the band Shakatak . On the 1989 album With You or Never was with I'm the One by the then most successful production team, among other things composition Stock Aitken Waterman included. That same year, Orleans appeared on the television show Do you understand fun? on.

From the 1990s, Orleans returned to its gospel roots and released several albums in this style. In 1998 the musical Mahalia about the life of the gospel legend Mahalia Jackson premiered in the Amberg City Theater with Orleans in the leading role. The play, directed by Michael Wedekind, is performed in Germany and neighboring countries to this day. In total, the production went on tour 16 times.

Over the years Orleans has appeared on stage with a number of well-known artists: She sang in duets with Peter Horton and Marc Marshall, among others .
