Joan Pons Álvarez

Joan Pons Álvarez (born August 8, 1946 in Ciutadella , Menorca ) is a Menorcan opera singer and world-renowned baritone .

Life

Pons studied singing in Barcelona and received his first engagement in the choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona . Soon he was entrusted with smaller bass solo parts. In 1977 he decided to take up the baritone subject.

It gained worldwide attention in December 1980 when he opened the La Scala season in Milan with the title role of Falstaff , directed by Giorgio Strehler and directed by Lorin Maazel . A month later he made his acclaimed debut as Tonio in Pagliacci in the production of Franco Zeffirelli . Since then he has appeared regularly at La Scala in Milan , where he can be heard in Tosca , La traviata , La fanciulla del West , Gianni Schicchi , Il tabarro and Cavalleria rusticana, among others . In the course of his career, Joan Pons has sung on the most famous opera stages around the world.

In 1992 he also appeared at the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games , an event that was seen live on television by around a billion people worldwide. In the same year he took part in the World's Fair in Seville .

Honors

On November 18, 2000 he received honorary doctorates from the University of the Balearic Islands. On December 1, 2006 he was named the famous son of the city of Ciutadella de Menorca.
