Joaquín Garcia Benitez

Joaquín Garcia Benitez CIM (born April 4, 1883 in Bucaramanga ; † September 1, 1958 ) was a Colombian clergyman and from 1942 to 1957 Roman Catholic Archbishop of Medellín .

Life

In 1896, Joaquín Garcia Benitez received permission from his parents to attend the seminary in. In 1905 he traveled to Europe and there joined the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, also known as the Eudists. On December 18, 1909, he was ordained a priest , and in June 1910 he received his doctorate theologiae . Until his appointment as bishop, he was rector of the San Pedro seminary in the Colombian Department of Antioquia .

Pope Benedict XV appointed him on September 15, 1917 Bishop of Santa Marta . Garcia Benitez was the first Colombian Eudist to be appointed bishop. He was ordained episcopate on February 17, 1918 by Rafael Afanador y Cadena , Bishop of Nueva Pamplona . Co-consecrators was the Bishop of Socorro Antonio Vicente Arenas y Rueda . On May 14, 1942, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Archbishop of Medellín. During his tenure he founded a boys' college there .

In 1951 he asked Pius XII. for health reasons to provide him with an auxiliary bishop . On November 28, 1957, Joaquín Garcia Benitez resigned from office and became titular archbishop of Selymbria . He died the following year at the age of 75 and was buried in Medellín Cathedral.
