Joaquín Samuel de Anchorena

Joaquín Samuel del Corazón de Jesús de Anchorena Riglos (born August 20, 1876 in Buenos Aires , † July 19, 1961 there ) was an Argentine lawyer, politician and mayor of the city of Buenos Aires. He held this office from October 21, 1910 to October 24, 1914.

Life

Joaquín Samuel de Anchorena studied at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires and received his diploma in 1898. In 1900 he married Sara Justa Madero Arteaga, with whom he had three children. She died in 1911 and five years later he married María Enriqueta Salas Martínez, with whom he also had three children.

From May 11, 1908 to October 20, 1910 he sat in the House of Representatives for the city of Buenos Aires.

In 1910, during the presidency of Roque Sáenz Peña , Anchorena became mayor of the capital. During his term of office the completion of the Parque Tres de Febrero and the associated rose garden as well as the opening of the new town hall fell . In addition, the first line of the Buenos Aires subway was inaugurated, today's line A.

Anchorena was President of the Sociedad Rural Argentina from 1916 to 1922 . In 1917 he founded the Instituto Biológico, which deals with hygiene issues in the agricultural industry. He was also President of the Jockey Club twice , from 1922 to 1923 and from 1958 to 1959.

In 1961 Anchorena died in his hometown. Since 1980 the Jockey Club has organized the El Gran Premio Internacional Anchorena, named after him.
