The Tiber oil field is a subsea offshore - oil field in the Gulf of Mexico . Discovered by BP in September 2009 and described by the press as a "gigantic" find, it is said to store 4 to 6 billion barrels of oil (for comparison: a find is considered to be "huge" with a capacity of 250 million barrels or more ).

In order to be able to develop the field for oil production, a 10,685 m deep borehole first had to be drilled at a depth of 1,260 m, which was also the world's deepest borehole of its kind.

The Tiber oil field is located in the undersea Keathley Canyon , approximately 400 km southeast of Houston , Texas and 480 km southwest of New Orleans .

The oil-bearing strata here come from the Palaeogene and are between 23 and 65 million years old. The Tiber is only the 18th field under development from this period, and drilling in these formations is among the most technically demanding today. Many of these deep oil deposits in the Gulf of Mexico are also buried under kilometer-thick salt deposits , which can lead to further problems with drilling. However, BP has already developed special techniques that circumvent these difficulties.

Oil from the Tiber field is one of the so-called light crude oils, which means that it has a low density and viscosity . It is therefore not viscous at room temperature, but rather liquid and also has a low boiling range because it has a particularly large number of short-chain molecules. Light crude oil is more expensive than heavy because it contains particularly large proportions of raw gasoline and raw diesel, or high yields of gasoline or diesel can easily be obtained during refining .

Initial estimates of the recoverable amounts are between 20 and 30%. However, news agencies such as Bloomberg warn of the technically highly complex extraction from these depths and suggest that it may take 5 to 6 years before development can be completed and extraction started. Based on the first experiences from the neighboring Kaskida oil field , doubts still exist about the yields that can actually be achieved.

BP auctioned the lot for the Tiber field on October 22, 2003. The development plan was announced in June 2008.

The drilling in this field was originally performed from the Transocean operated, dynamically positionable, semi-submersible drilling platform, Deepwater Horizon . After initial delays, these started in March 2009.

The field was presented to the press on September 2, 2009, causing the price of BP shares to soar 3.7%.
