Joaquín Luis Miguel Suárez de Rondelo y Fernández (born August 18, 1781 in Canelones , † December 26, 1868 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan politician .

Life

Suárez held various positions and offices in the course of his political career, both during and after the end of the Uruguayan independence process. So he was first from July 29, 1815 to January 20, 1817 together with Miguel Manuel Francisco Barreiro Bermúdez in the role of Governor of Montevideo as President of the provincial government within the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata , before that at that time Provincia Oriental called Uruguay was conquered by Carlos Federico Lecor for Brazil . From December 1 to December 22, 1828, after achieving independence, he held the interim office of governor and captain general , for which José Rondeau had been elected and which he took over from Suárez on December 22. He was also a member of the constituent assembly (1828-1830) ( Asamblea Constituyente y Legislativa del Estado Oriental ).

In the period from September 19, 1831 to November 7, 1831, Suárez, a member of the Partido Colorado, was then Foreign Minister of Uruguay . The official abolition of slavery in Uruguay, which was decided on October 28, 1846, falls during this term of office. The design of the Uruguayan flag in its present form goes back to Suárez.

In the Montevidean district of Prado , the Avenida Joaquín Suárez , in which the presidential residence is located, is named after him. A city in the Uruguayan department of Canelones and a settlement in the department of Colonia also bear his name in his honor.
