Joby Ogwyn (* 1974 ) is an American mountaineer , base jumper and wingsuit jumper .

Life

Ogwyn grew up in Louisiana and studied economics at the Centenary College of Louisiana.

He started climbing as a teenager. At the age of 18, he climbed Kilimanjaro and in 1999, at the age of 24, was the youngest American to have climbed Mount Everest . At the age of 26, he was the youngest mountaineer at the time to have climbed all of the Seven Summits . He then worked as a mountain guide in the Himalayas . After climbing Lhotse and Makalu , Ogwyn turned to speed climbing . In 2004, he climbed Cho Oyu in 8 hours. In 2006, Ogwyn climbed the northeast ridge of Mount Everest in 24 hours.

In 2007, Ogwyn worked with the producers of National Geographic Adventure on the television series Adventure Wanted , in which he presented various extreme sports.

In 2009, Ogwyn jumped the Matterhorn in a wingsuit for the first time . Working with the Discovery Channel , Ogwyn planned the first wingsuit jump from Mount Everest. However, after the disaster on Mount Everest on April 18, 2014 with 16 dead, including Ogwyn's Sherpa team, the Discovery Channel canceled the jump.

Ogwyn lives in Italy and California.
