Jochem Kahl

Jochem Kahl (* 1961 in Ravensburg ) is a German Egyptologist .

Life

Jochem Kahl studied from 1983 to 1984 empirical cultural studies , history and Greek at the University of Tübingen . From 1984 he studied Egyptology, Classical Archeology and Prehistory and Early History at the universities of Münster, Tübingen and Vienna. In 1990 he was awarded the title of Magister Artium at the University of Tübingen. From 1990 to 1992 he worked there as a research assistant.

In 1992 he received his doctorate with the study "The system of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing in the 0th - 3rd dynasty". From 1992 to 1998, Kahl was a research assistant at the Institute for Egyptology and Coptic Studies at the University of Münster . From 1994 to 1995 he studied demotic writing and language at the University of Cologne . Kahl habilitated in 1998 in the subject of Egyptology, his habilitation thesis was entitled "Siut - Thebes: A case study on the appreciation of traditions." From 1998 to 2004 he was employed as a university lecturer at the Institute for Egyptology and Coptic Studies at the University of Münster .

In 2004, he was awarded the title of “ Extraordinary Professor ” by the University of Münster. From 2005 to 2008 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Mainz . In 2006 he became an "extraordinary professor" at the University of Mainz. In 2007 and 2008 he had various stays as a visiting professor at the University of Vienna . Since October 2008 he has been a professor at the Free University of Berlin . Kahl is a member of the German Archaeological Institute .

He is the specialist editor for Egyptology at the Orientalist literary newspaper. Journal for the science of the whole Orient and its relations to the adjacent cultural areas (OLZ) (Akademie Verlag Berlin, ISSN  0030-5383 ) and since 2010 co-editor of Studies on Ancient Egyptian Culture .

With Ursula Verhoeven-van Elsbergen , Jochem Kahl also heads research and excavations in Assiut and the surrounding area in Middle Egypt.
