Joachim Nestler (born May 3, 1936 in Wittgensdorf ; † March 17, 2002 in Potsdam ) was a German scriptwriter and writer. With Manfred Freitag he formed a successful film-writing duo in the GDR.

Life

Nestler belonged to "the first generation of film students trained in the GDR": from 1956 to 1960 he studied dramaturgy with Wera and Claus Küchenmeister at the Academy of Film in Potsdam-Babelsberg and from 1960 worked at DEFA . Together with Manfred Freitag, he wrote scripts and scenarios for numerous children's and youth films. Both made their debut as screenwriters in 1963 in the children's film Daniel and the World Champion . Both also adapted fairy tale films for the screen, including 1972 Sixes Come Through the World .

The film Just don't think I'm crying , for which he and Freitag wrote the scenario, was banned after 1965 in the course of the 11th plenum of the SED. In their script for the film Johannes Kepler , written in 1974 , critics also saw in retrospect “their own heretic and confessional conflicts with the authorities. Not only Kepler had to suffer from a heated mood calling for the Inquisition . ”Nestler and Freitag also appeared as authors of numerous children's books.

From 1994 Nestler held the professorship for film and television dramaturgy / screenwriting at the University of Film and Television "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam. He died after a serious illness on March 17th, 2002 at the age of 65.
