Daniel und der Weltmeister is a German DEFA feature film by Ingrid Meyer-Reschke from 1963 based on a children's book by Wera and Claus Küchenmeister from 1962.
action
Daniel is about five years old who would like to become a successful cyclist like Täve Schur . He only travels on his tricycle to exercise, and when it's just from bed to bathroom to kitchen table. The problem is there because he doesn't want to drink his milk for breakfast. So he always comes up with new tricks to avoid them. He drives this until his mother locks the tricycle.
In order to prove to his mother that you don't have to drink milk as a world champion, he sets off in his mind on his tricycle to Täve to get confirmation. This path leads him through half of the GDR, because Täve is very busy - he is also a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR - and Daniel gets a lot of tips from people where he could find him. So he passes a cow pasture where a milker is at work. Of course, he refuses the fresh milk offered to him, which makes the cows very angry. But he still gets the tip to look for Täve in Leipzig . Here he discovers the striking mechanism on the Krochhochhaus , which he can have as often as he wishes. When it occurs to him that he wants to go to Täve, he is sent to the German University for Physical Culture , where he is studying to get his coaching license. But here he meets many athletes from various sports, just not a cyclist. In return, however, he receives a new hint where he can look further.
On his way, Daniel comes across a bridge construction site whose workers are very unhappy because a wheel in the drive of their crane is defective. The bridge has to be completed, however, because cyclists should race over it in a short time. With a heavy heart Daniel gives them the front wheel of his tricycle, and the crane can be repaired with it and the bridge construction finished. Daniel now has to continue on foot, but in a steelworks he receives a new front wheel and the information about where a street race with Täve is taking place. In order to achieve this, his previous friends help him by blowing hard, which enables him to reach a high speed and arrive at the finish together with Täve.
When Täve picks up a bottle of milk after the victory and gives Daniel a drink, Daniel is convinced that world champions drink milk too.

Daniel und der Weltmeister was filmed partly in Agfa- Color and partly in black and white by the artistic working group “Berlin” and had its world premiere on October 6, 1963 in the Babylon cinema in Berlin .
criticism
For Günter Sobe from the Berliner Zeitung, the film was a modern fairy tale. The two scriptwriters told the story simply and magnificently.
