Manfred Freitag (screenwriter)
Manfred Freitag (born June 4, 1934 in Reichenbach , † June 18, 1995 in Potsdam ) was a German scriptwriter and writer. With Joachim Nestler he formed a successful film-writing duo in the GDR.
Life
Freitag belonged to "the first generation of film students trained in the GDR": from 1956 to 1960 he studied dramaturgy with Wera and Claus Küchenmeister at the Potsdam-Babelsberg Academy of Film, and from 1960 worked at DEFA . Together with Joachim Nestler, he wrote scripts and scenarios for numerous children's and youth films. Both made their debut as screenwriters in 1963 in the children's film Daniel and the World Champion . Both also adapted fairy tale films for the screen, including Sixes Come Through the World (1972).
The film Just don't think I'm crying , for which he and Nestler wrote the scenario, was banned after 1965 during the 11th plenary session of the SED. In their script for the film Johannes Kepler , written in 1974 , critics also saw in retrospect “their own heretic and confessional conflicts with the authorities. Not only Kepler had to suffer from a heated mood calling for the Inquisition . ”Freitag and Nestler also appeared as authors of numerous children's books.
From 1984, Freitag worked as a lecturer at the HFF. He died in Potsdam in 1995 at the age of 61.
