Jock Sturges (* 1947 in New York ) is an American photographer .

Life

Sturges graduated with a BFA in Perceptual Psychology and Photography from Marlboro College in 1974 and graduated with an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985 .

Jock Sturges became known for his recordings on nudist beaches in California , Spain and especially in France ( Montalivet ). His pictures mainly depict naked girls and young women. Unlike David Hamilton , for example , Sturges does not see his pictures as sensual, erotic or even pornographic. On the contrary, they should primarily show beauty, fragility and impermanence.

In the United States , Sturges' office was searched by the FBI in 1990 and his pictures and equipment were confiscated. The reason was the allegation of child pornography . These allegations could not be upheld and he got his equipment and pictures back. Later that year he was attacked by the religious right. Through appearances on TV programs and defense by many liberals in the USA, he was also able to survive these attacks.

His works can now be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Bibliothèque nationale de France , the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . There were also exhibitions in galleries in Tokyo , Berlin , Munich , Brussels and other cities around the world.
