Jodocus Prüm

Jodocus Prüm (born September 22, 1807 in Wehlen , † March 27, 1876 in Klausen ) was a German winemaker and founder .

Prüm was born as the twelfth child of Johann Philipp Prüm (1765-1809) and Maria Schander. He was single and devoted his wealth primarily to social and cultural purposes.

Jodocus had 12 siblings, half of whom died in childhood or adolescence. Of his siblings, only Matthias Prüm (1835–1890) married, whose children founded a large number of famous wineries (including Joh. Jos. Prüm and Weins-Prüm ).

In 1842 he had the Wehlener sundial built, which later became a world-famous vineyard location and a symbol for excellent wines and contributed to the economic and social development of the village of Wehlen . It was built as a helpful time display for winemakers and vineyard workers. In the same year he also had the “Zeltinger Sundial” built.

  • In 1864 he built the "Inkart Fountain" to commemorate the Inkart district, which was destroyed by the plague in 1627, and the so-called "Joducusbrünnchen" on the "Mooskopf".
  • From 1868–1870 he had the former Capuchin monastery "Zur heiligen Familie" in Bernkastel rebuilt as a hospital and orphanage.
  • In 1871, in Wehlen, he laid the foundation stone for the conversion of the “Old Church” into poor houses, which was carried out by the heirs with the help of his property.
  • 1871–1873 he built the “Maria Himmelfahrt” branch church in Kautenbach for the Catholic parish.

Sarcophagus Jodocus Prüm

Jodocus Prüm died on March 27, 1876 in Klausen. He was buried in Wehlen in the "Old Church". There in the crypt is his sarcophagus, which he had made during his lifetime.

Jodocus Prüm Foundation

In his honor, the great-grandchildren of his brother Mathias Prüm, Jost Prüm and Eckart Prüm set up the “Jodocus Prüm” Foundation on September 22nd, 2007 on his 200th birthday.
