Pointe aux Piments is a place ("Village") in the north of Mauritius . It is part of the Pamplemousses district and administratively belongs to the Village Council Area (VCA) Pointe aux Piments. At the 2011 census, the place had 9,079 inhabitants. The districts of Camp Bestel, Pointe aux Biches and Trou-aux-Biches belong to the place.

tourism

Pointe aux Piments is located on the northwest coast of the island and is a center of tourism. The Mauritius Aquarium, the only aquarium on the island, is located in the village. At the southern end of the coast of the place is the (mostly in the neighboring Balaclava located) the nature reserve Baie de l'Arsenal Marine National Park . Beaches used for tourism, tourist infrastructure and hotels can be found along the entire coastline of the place. This includes a hotel belonging to the Le Méridien chain .

history

The site of today's location was originally part of the Triolet plantation . Before this, parts of the area split off over time and were managed as separate plantations. Pointe aux Piments itself was a small fishing village.

On April 4, 1809, the frigate Iphigénie ran aground off Pointe aux Biches (the entire coast is surrounded by a reef). On February 21, 1821, a family drama took place in Pointe aux Biches, which caused a lot of media coverage on the island: An M. Jasmin killed his wife and two children with a sword and then killed himself.

religion

The main Catholic church in Pointe-aux-Piments is Saint-Jean-Marie-Vianney (consecrated 1930). The parish also includes the Eglise Saint-Jean-Marie-Vianney in Pointe-aux-Piments and the Chapelle Saint-Georges in Labourdonnais.

The parish church of the Presbyterian Church in Pointe-aux-Piments is dedicated to Saint-Pierre, that is to say to Saint Peter.

The religious center of the Hindus is the Maheswarnath Mandir temple in neighboring Triolet, about one kilometer from Pointe aux Biches.
