history
There are two conceivable origins of the name Triolet. Triolet could be named after Pierre Triolet, a master carpenter for the French East India Company . Alternatively, the name may be due to the fact that the place had its origins in a plantation that belonged to the trio Maillard, Froppier and Dumont.
The Triolet estate covered much of the northwest of the island. Over time, parts were split off. In 1777 Jaques Le Roux Kermorseven acquired part of the 8,896 arpent of the Triolet agricultural property, which also included the area of today's Grand Baie .
In 1880 the sugar price collapsed on world markets. As a result, large parts of the previously cultivated areas in Mauritius were set aside. The workers took over these areas in small plots and cultivated the area on their own account. From 1880 to 1920 the previous plantation structure was dissolved and localities, including today's Triolet, emerged. The place only grew slowly and rapidly from the middle of the 20th century:
- 1911: 3.182
- 1931: 3,751
- 1944: 5,200
- 1952: 7.217
- 1972: 11.852
- 1972: 13,249 (from 1972 the information refers to the VCA)
- 1983: 17.221
- 2000: 21,250
- 2011: 23,386
In 1906 the first school was opened in Triolet. In 1913 the small planters in Triolet founded a credit union.
religion
The first pilgrims to visit Ganga Talao in 1898 were from Triolet and were led by Pandit Giri Gossayne from Terre Rouge .
In the same year, the Maheswarnath Mandir Hindu temple was built on the ruins of an old sugar factory. Today the complex consists of half a dozen temples and is next to Ganga Talao the largest temple complex on the island.
The Muslim community has the Masjid-E-Noor mosque and the Achmadiyya Muslim Umar Mosque. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has built a temple on the outskirts.
Triolet has been the seat of the Catholic parish of Notre Dame de Fatima since 1964.
