Fond du Sac is a place ("Village") on Mauritius . Administratively it belongs to the Village Council Area (VCA) Fond du Sac. At the 2011 census, the place had 5186 inhabitants.

history

In 1836 the Fond du Sac sugar estate, a sugar plantation, was founded by Bellisle Vacher with an area of 189 arpents . Between 1844 and 1870 the property was owned by the brothers Félix and Théophile Lionnet and their children. The area grew to 477 arpents. In 1866 the sugar factory was closed and in 1870 the land was parceled out and sold individually. The largest part was acquired by Francis Pitot, who thus formed the Belle Vue Pitot estate (Belle Vue is now also a district of the Fond du Sac VCA).

Félix Lionnet was known for his cruelty towards his workers and his lack of restraint. On June 14, 1845, there was a confrontation with the Protector of the immigrants in Port Louis , because he refused to take on the job of distributing the new contract workers. The dispute ended in fistfights and a criminal case that was not concluded until the Supreme Court .

In 1947 today's Fond du Sac VCA was formed. In 1948 a public school was set up in a rented building. In 1953 a school building was built (the location of the new building had been argued for years before).
