Mapou is a place ("Village") in the north of Mauritius . It is part of the Pamplemousses district (southern part of the village) and the Rivière du Rempart district (northern part) and administratively belongs to the Village Council Area (VCA) Mapou. At the 2011 census, the place had 1592 inhabitants.

history

Northfields International High School

Mapou gained importance in 1863 when a station on the Port Louis – Grande Rivière Sud-Est line was built in Mapou . Branch lines branched off here to Labourdonnais and Esperance. See also rail transport in Mauritius . After the end of rail traffic in Mauritius, the location on the M2 motorway was essential for the transport connection of the place.

In 1929 the court of first instance, the District Court for the Rivière du Rempart district, was moved from Poudre d'Or to Mapou. See also court organization in Mauritius .

The place is best known for the Château de Labordonnais. The manor house was built in 1856-1859 by Christian William Wiehe (1807-1878).

The Northfields International High School, the Du Nord School and the Mapou Government School are located on site.

The Forbach windmill tower on Forbach Road is a listed building . The mill, built by Joseph Staub in 1818, was used to grind sugar cane.
