Rivière du Rempart is a place ("Village") in the north of Mauritius . It is part of the Rivière du Rempart district of the same name and administratively belongs to the Village Council Area (VCA) Rivière du Rempart. At the 2011 census, the place had 10,825 inhabitants. The Riviére du Rempart VCA comprises the districts of Coquinbourg, Hermitage, la Clémence, le Ravin, Schoenfeld and Pointe des Lascars. The place is located at the mouth of the Rivière du Rempart river of the same name .

history

The history of the place is closely linked to the sugar cane plantation and sugar factory Mon Songe. In 1774 Antoine Jérôme Pilot, who was already the owner of the St. Omer plantation, was granted a concession for a sugar cane plantation in what is now the Rivière du Rempart with a size of 5600 arpents . In 1820 his heirs built the sugar factory. As part of the concentration of sugar production, the sugar factory increasingly took over the production of neighboring factories, which were then closed. In the 60 years of its existence, sugar production rose from 740 to 2000 tons. In 1884 the factory was one of the first on the island to use electricity for sugar production. The high chimney of the factory, which has not been in operation since 1896, is reminiscent of the old factory to this day. After 1947, the concentration of sugar production continued and the factory company acquired the factories in Schoenfeld, Haute Rive, Belle Vue Maurel, l'Amitié, Plaine des Roches and Bell Séjour. This increased production to 35,686 tons in 1936 and 38,899 tons in 2005.

It was essential for the rise of the factory and the place that the place was connected to the northern line of the railway in 1864 . A connection to Mon Loisir was created at kilometer 24.9.

In addition to the sugar industry, the mechanical engineering company of the brothers Auguste and Gustave Maurel was an important employer in Rivière du Rempart. The company was a supplier for the machines for the sugar factories. In our time, the four local textile factories are especially important employers.
