Joe "King" Carrasco (* as Joseph Teutsch in Dumas , Texas ) is an American guitarist and rock musician who became known for his mix of Tex-Mex , rock 'n' roll , new wave and garage rock called Nuevo Wavo .

After Carrasco had played in various bands since the late 1960s, he founded his first band, El Molino , in 1976 , which included Augie Meyers and members of the West Side Horns . The debut album Joe King Carrasco & El Molino (1978) had Carrasco pressed himself and named the label Lisa Records - after his girlfriend at the time. The record, limited to 5000 copies, which revived the Tex-Mex sound of the Sir Douglas Quintet and combined it with garage rock , quickly became a coveted object of the underground .

In 1979 Carrasco founded The Crowns and performed primarily in the New York City club scene . He now called his music Nuevo Wavo . On stage, Carrasco usually wore a coat and crown. As one of the first American bands Joe King Carrasco And The Crowns were signed in 1980 by the English label Stiff Records . In the following years Carrasco was able to go on extensive tours in Europe as well as North and South America with his band. On his reggae- influenced album Synapse Gap (1982), with which he switched to the major label MCA , a certain Michael Jackson sang the background harmonies.

Both Synapse Gap and the follow-up Party Weekend (1983) did not make it into the charts and so Carrasco has now started again for smaller labels. After Carrasco had lived in Nicaragua for some time in the mid-1980s , the Latin influence grew on his following records Border Town (1985) and Bandido Rock (1987). Carrasco called his new mixture Tequila Reggae . The backing band was now called Las Coronas .

Since the 1990s, things have become quieter around Carrasco. He only recorded sporadically and released his own albums. In 1995 MCA published the 18-track compilation Anthology , which only takes into account the two LPs Synapse Gap and Party Weekend . In 1996 Carrasco appeared as a guest musician on the CD Four Aces of the Texas Tornados , which covered his Tell Me . He was most recently with a cover version of Adios Mexico on the Doug Sahm - tribute album Keep Your Soul ( Vanguard to hear, 2009).

The self-proclaimed "King of Tex-Mex" is also active as a filmmaker and in 2008 released his film Rancho No Tengo , in which he appeared as a producer, director, lead actor and soundtrack composer, on DVD.

Joe King Carrasco still performs regularly with his party music. Mostly near his adopted home Puerto Vallarta .
