Dumas is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Moore County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

geography

The city is located at the intersection of US Highway 87 with US Highway 287 in the northwest of the county in the so-called Texas Panhandle .

history

The place was named after Louis Dumas , the president of the Panhandle Townsite Company .

According to the 2000 census, 13,747 people lived here in 4,755 households and 3,675 families. The population density was 1,034.6 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 68.09% White, 0.72% African American, 0.59% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 26.73% other ethnic groups. About 2.68% were mixed race and 42.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,755 households, 42.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.6% of them were married couples living together. 9.2% were single mothers and 22.7% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were single households and 9.4% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.29 people.

32.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9% 18 to 24, 28.0% 25 to 44, 18.7% 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.4 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 36,147 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,652 . Males had a median income of $ 30,833 versus $ 19,967 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,180. 12.8% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 17.8% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.7% were 65 or older.
