Joe Maini
Joe Maini (born February 8, 1930 as Joseph Maini Jr. in Providence , Rhode Island , † May 7, 1964 ) was an American jazz saxophonist ( alto saxophone , tenor saxophone ) of modern jazz .
Maini comes from a musical family; both his father and son played Italian folk music. After taking lessons on the alto saxophone, he became a professional musician in 1947. At the beginning of his career, Joe Maini played with Alvino Rey and Johnny Bothwell in 1948 , with Jimmy Zito in 1949 and with Claude Thornhill from 1950 . From the mid-1950s he worked as a freelance musician in Hollywood and made recordings with Kenny Drew , Terry Gibbs , Bill Holman , Jimmy Knepper / Charles Mingus , Red Mitchell , Jack Montrose ,Jack Sheldon and accompanied the singers Lena Horne and June Christy . In 1955 he was a founding member of the Shelly Manne & His Men formation . In 1964 he was first alto saxophonist with Louie Bellson and was also active in Gerald Wilson's bands .
Maini died in Los Angeles at the age of 34. Various sources state that he was a victim of "Russian Roulette" experiments, and his family and some people who were present when he died insisted that it was an accident involving a firearm experiment.
44 years after his death, Lone Hill Jazz released a 4-CD box with his combo recordings as a band leader.
