Joseph Prescott "Joe" Pitman (born August 21, 1924 in Laconia , New Hampshire - † June 1, 2018 ) was an American weightlifter.

Career

Joe Pitman of Chambersberg, PA, started lifting weights in 1945 and was just growing into the American top class when the famous Anthony Terlazzo , the 1936 Olympic gold medalist and multiple world champion, retired for reasons of age. The American Weightlifting Association was happy to have found a light top lifter in him again. Lightweight lifters have always been in short supply in the US team. In 1948 Joe Pitman started at the Olympic Games in London , but could not yet place in the front field. In 1950 he celebrated his greatest victory when he became world champion in the lightweight (up to 67.5 kg body weight at that time) in Paris . At the US championships he won in 1950 and 1951 over the young Thomas Kono , who blocked his way to the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki . In the meantime, Joe started for Bob Hoffmann's York Barbell Club. Even when he moved to Miami to work as a teacher, he stayed with this club. In Miami he was trained and promoted by Stanley Stanczyk , the multiple world champion. Joe Pitman remained active until 1960 and won a total of ten USA championships.
