Nikolai Kostylew ( Russian: Николай Григорьевич Костылев ; * 1931 ; † 1993 ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

He grew up in Smolensk and attended the sports school for youth there. There he had his first contacts with weightlifting, which he continued when he transferred to the teachers' college in Malachowka near Moscow at the age of 16 . He made rapid progress and good performances were not long in coming. In 1952 he already reached 350 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. In 1953 he achieved a world record in two-armed snatch with 118.5 kg, which was to be followed by several more. Although he reached 365 kg in 1953 and 380 kg in 1954, he had to wait until 1955 before he came to a first use at a world championship. That was because there were a lot of good weightlifters in the Soviet Union, especially in the lightweight class. After 1956 he stagnated in his performance between 370 and 380 kg and came to no more international assignments.
