Joe Puryear

Joseph Nicholi Puryear (born August 17, 1973 - October 27, 2010 at Lapche Kang ) was an American mountaineer .

Puryear was killed on October 27, 2010 when attempting to climb Lapche Kang in Tibet. Up to this point he and his climbing partner David Gottlieb had climbed several six-thousanders in the Himalayas for the first time.

Joe Puryear grew up on a vineyard in the Yakima Valley in Washington State . He worked as a ranger in Mount Rainier National Park . He then became enthusiastic about mountain sports and climbed numerous mountains in North and South America and in the Himalayas. Together with David Gottlieb, he carried out the first ascent of the six-thousanders Kang Nachugo , Takargo and Jobo Rinjang .

When attempting a second ascent of the 7367  m high Lapche Kang in Tibet , Puryear, which was unsecured at the time, fell 460 m in a cornice fracture .
