Joe le taxi is a song by Vanessa Paradis released in April 1987 and a single from her debut album M&J , released in August 1988 . The song, written by Étienne Roda-Gil and Franck Langolff , was number one in the French charts for eleven weeks and was also successful outside of France. It remained the most famous song by Paradis, who was only fourteen when it was released.

Joe le taxi is about a taxi driver from Portugal named Joe who fled to France because of the Estado Novo and now works in Paris . The lyrics describe that Joe would know all the important places and bars in town, would like to drink rum, love Latin American music and own a saxophone himself . The text also mentions the well-known Latin American musicians Xavier Cugat and Yma Sumac .

Chart placements

The song, recorded in 1986 in a studio in Rueil-Malmaison , entered the French charts at number 21, before becoming number one in the fourth week and remaining in this position for a total of eleven weeks. The song had other top 10 placements in Belgium (8th place), Ireland (2nd place), Norway (5th place), Sweden (7th place), the United Kingdom (3rd place) and in the Federal Republic of Germany, where it reached the 8th place.

Music video

The music video for Joe le taxi , directed by Jean-Sébastien Deligny and published in 1987, first shows Joe driving through the city at night in his taxi (a first-generation Chevrolet Nova ) and stopping next to a passenger before the picture shows the next one Vanessa Paradis singing and dancing cabs of the same construction alternates. Black and white photos of the taxi ride and the shadows of two saxophone players can be seen in the background. The video ends with another look at Joe in his taxi.

An alternative, lesser-known music video shows Vanessa Paradis sitting in a blue jeep that Joe is driving through Martinique .

Further versions and cover versions

In addition to the single version, a long version of Joe le taxi with a length of five and a half minutes was published. For the release of the song in South America and Spain in April 1988, Vanessa Paradis sang a Spanish-language version called Joe el taxi .

Well-known cover versions of Joe le taxi appeared in 1999 by Stereo Total and in 2010 by The Divine Comedy . Other covers were created by various Japanese musicians in the original version as well as with Japanese texts. A Portuguese version under the title Vou de Táxi became a successful radio hit in Brazil for the musician and presenter Angélica Ksyvickis.
