Johai Ben-Nun ( Hebrew יוחאי בן-נון; * December 17, 1924 in Haifa ; † June 6, 1994 in New York City ) was an Israeli Rear Admiral ( Aluf ) and the sixth in command of the Israeli Navy from 1960 to 1966 .

Life

Johai Ben-Nun was born in Haifa; his parents came with the first aliyah .

In 1941 he joined the Jewish paramilitary organization Palmach , where he was promoted to group leader. In 1944 he joined the Palyam , the Palmach's naval group. In 1945 he sank two British Royal Navy ships in a covert operation .

When the Israeli War of Independence broke out , Ben-Nun founded the Shayetet 13 combat swimmer unit . He was in command of the force that sank the Emir Faruk , a ship of the Egyptian Navy , on October 22, 1948 , as part of a naval mission of Operation Jo'av . For his commitment he received the Hero of Israel award and the Israeli Medal of Bravery ( Itur HaGvura ).

In the Sinai War he served as the commander of the INS Yafo and was involved in the capture of an Egyptian destroyer . After the war he continued to command the Shayetet 13.

Ben-Nun was appointed commander of the Israeli Navy in 1960. In this position he enlarged the fleet and increased its attack potential. Although he retired from service in 1966, he volunteered in naval operations as well as missions in the Golan Heights during the Six Day War .

In addition to his military career, he founded the semi-official Oceanographic and Limnological Institute in Israel, of which he was also director.

Johai Ben-Nun died in New York in 1994 and was buried in Kibbutz Ma'agan Michael . Streets are named after him in Haifa and Jerusalem .
