Johan Verbeke

Johan C. Verbeke (born July 9, 1951 in Ghent ) is a Belgian diplomat .

Life

Johan Verbeke studied law and philosophy at the University of Ghent , Université de Nancy and Yale Law School . He joined the foreign service in 1981. From 1983 to 1985 he was Ambassador to Beirut , 1985 to Amman and from 1985 to 1988 Ambassador to Bujumbura . From 1988 to 1990 he was chargé d'affaires in Santiago de Chile . From 1990 to 1992 he was press spokesman for the Belgian Foreign Ministry. From 1992 to 1994 he was the representative of the Belgian government to the European Union . From 1994 to 1998 he was the deputy ambassador to Washington, DC , and from 1998 to 1999 he was deputy head of the Department of Politics in the State Department. From 1999 to 2000 he headed the Europe department in the Foreign Ministry. From 2000 to 2002 he was the office manager of the Belgian European Minister. From 2002 to 2004 he was the office manager of the Foreign Minister. From 2004 to 2008 he was a representative of the Belgian government on the United Nations Security Council . In 2008 he was Special Coordinator of the UN Secretary General in Lebanon . From 2008 to 2009 he was the representative of the UN Secretary General in Georgia . and headed the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia . From January 2010 to 2014 he was Ambassador to the Court of St. James in London, and since 2014 he has been Ambassador to Washington, DC

Johan Verbeke is married to Catherine Dubois and has three children.
